A known problem in these differentials is the noise from the bearings. The noise often comes after the car has run over 175.000km. These bearings can not normally be replaced by BMW and refers to buy a new or used rear axle. These solutions cost much money or only solves the problem briefly, if you are unlucky.
These bearings are made for motorsport with a high quality and durability. When changing the bearings you have to disassemble the rear axle and remove gear etc. Then the bearings must be pressed out, and new bearings pressed in. Then mount it all together again according to BMW regulations. New gear oil filled. The spacer must be reused, because it can not get the correct from either BMW or their motorsport department.
